    Not Another Boring Resident Didactic Conference

    BackgroundThe Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requires that residency programs in emergency medicine plan at least 5 hours of didactic experiences per week. Instructional methods should include smallâ group techniques, problemâ based learning, or computerâ based instruction. Despite recommendations from the ACGME, many programsâ conference didactics continue to include primarily lectureâ based instruction.MethodsThe authors describe instructional methods that promote active learning and may be superior to traditional lectureâ based education.ResultsThese methods include varying instructional methods, caseâ based learning, teamâ based learning and the flipped classroom, audience response systems, simulation, â wars,â oral boards, escape rooms and scavenger hunts, expert panel discussions, debates, clinical pathologic cases, and leaderboards. The authors discuss how these methods can be implemented to make emergency medicine didactic conferences more varied and interactive for learners.ConclusionsWhile there is minimal research on the efficacy of these methods in graduate medical education, many have shown to improvement engagement of learners and to be effective in undergraduate medical education.     Dominant Role of Oncogene Dosage and Absence of Tumor Suppressor Activity in Nras-Driven Hematopoietic Transformation

    Biochemical properties of Ras oncoproteins and their transforming ability strongly support a dominant mechanism of action in tumorigenesis. However, genetic studies unexpectedly suggested that wild-type (WT) Ras exerts tumor suppressor activity. Expressing oncogenic Nras[superscript G12D] in the hematopoietic compartment of mice induces an aggressive myeloproliferative neoplasm that is exacerbated in homozygous mutant animals. Here, we show that increased Nras[superscript G12D] gene dosage, but not inactivation of WT Nras, underlies the aggressive in vivo behavior of Nras[superscript G12D over G12D] hematopoietic cells. Modulating Nras[superscript G12D] dosage had discrete effects on myeloid progenitor growth, signal transduction, and sensitivity to MAP-ERK kinase (MEK) inhibition. Furthermore, enforced WT N-Ras expression neither suppressed the growth of Nras-mutant cells nor inhibited myeloid transformation by exogenous Nras[superscript G12D]. Importantly, NRAS expression increased in human cancer cell lines with NRAS mutations. These data have therapeutic implications and support reconsidering the proposed tumor suppressor activity of WT Ras in other cancers.Pfizer Inc. Students in this project prepared months in advance to assist in the Eastern Division Conference for the American Choral Directors Association. The students explored the many possibilities with which modern technology can benefit the music world. This report suggests technological alternatives to routine choral practices, and can serve as a guide for future choral conferences

    PSR J1024-0719:A Millisecond Pulsar in an Unusual Long-Period Orbit

    PSR J1024-0719 is a millisecond pulsar that was long thought to be isolated. However, puzzling results concerning its velocity, distance, and low rotational period derivative have led to a reexamination of its properties. We present updated radio timing observations along with new and archival optical data which show that PSR J1024-0719 is most likely in a long-period (2-20 kyr) binary system with a low-mass (approximate to 0.4 M-circle dot), low-metallicity (Z approximate to -0.9 dex) main-sequence star. Such a system can explain most of the anomalous properties of this pulsar. We suggest that this system formed through a dynamical exchange in a globular cluster that ejected it into a halo orbit, which is consistent with the low observed metallicity for the stellar companion. Further astrometric and radio timing observations such as measurement of the third period derivative could strongly constrain the range of orbital parameters

    The NANOGrav 11-year Data Set: High-precision Timing of 45 Millisecond Pulsars

    We present high-precision timing data over time spans of up to 11 years for 45 millisecond pulsars observed as part of the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) project, aimed at detecting and characterizing low-frequency gravitational waves. The pulsars were observed with the Arecibo Observatory and/or the Green Bank Telescope at frequencies ranging from 327 MHz to 2.3 GHz. Most pulsars were observed with approximately monthly cadence, and six high-timing-precision pulsars were observed weekly. All were observed at widely separated frequencies at each observing epoch in order to fit for time-variable dispersion delays. We describe our methods for data processing, time-of-arrival (TOA) calculation, and the implementation of a new, automated method for removing outlier TOAs. We fit a timing model for each pulsar that includes spin, astrometric, and (for binary pulsars) orbital parameters; time-variable dispersion delays; and parameters that quantify pulse-profile evolution with frequency. The timing solutions provide three new parallax measurements, two new Shapiro delay measurements, and two new measurements of significant orbital-period variations. We fit models that characterize sources of noise for each pulsar. We find that 11 pulsars show significant red noise, with generally smaller spectral indices than typically measured for non-recycled pulsars, possibly suggesting a different origin.
